In September, 2001, Ted Alexander, the author of the book " Ransome in the Baltic" from the Great Britain, visited Riga at the invitation of publishing house " RTC ВАSК "Ltd. The book is issued in English by the Riga publishing house " RTC BASK "Ltd., and with assistance of the Ministry of culture and the Ministry of Education is sent to all schools and libraries in Latvia. The book tells about creativity of wellknown English children's writer Arthur Ransome, who in 1920's lived and worked in Latvia and Estonia as the correspondent of the newspaper " The Manchester Guardian ".
Creative work of Arthur Ransome is widely known all over the world, tens thousand the British have grown on his fascinating and very kind children's stories. Nowadays his books are issued in many countries of the world; there are more than 20 of Ransome books' fans societies in the different countries.
Ted Alexander, who live in Portsmund, is one of the active members of such society. The former seafarer, he once with the greatest interest has read all issued works of the compatriot and has decided to study his creativity and the biography more deeply. According to Ted Alexander reckoning, the most interesting, but, unfortunately, still insufficiently investigated, is the Baltic period of life of the English writer.
In 1919 Ransome has made travel from Revel through Latvia to Moscow and has personally delivered to the then Russian government the major letters and documents which have begun the contract of Baltic republics' independence. Having arrived to Latvia, Ted Alexander has found many places where once Ransome was. In Riga Stokholmas street and the Riga yacht - club could be mentioned.
Two days Ted completely has devoted to Latgalia, trying to recreate a part of Ransome route from Revel to Moscow. And it was possible to him. In Karsava he has visited the railway station which almost completely was kept such as Ransome has described it in the notes.
There is a house in Balin where the writer stopped on a lodging for the night... As appeared, the English writer, who brought in the essential contribution to finding independence of our republic, for the present is poorly known in Latvia. But now, the issue of Ted Alexander book will make possible to fill this blank.
