The Nord Stream pipeline has entered the Baltic Sea, and to mark the beginning of the offshore pipeline construction phase Nord Stream hosted a solemn opening ceremony in Portovaya Bay near Vyborg on April 9, 2010.
Soon after began the pipeline construction activities in Germany - on the East-West side of the Baltic Sea. First pipes will be laid on the seabed in the Bay of Greiswald in June, 2010 by the special pipelay vessel Castoro-10.
The Nord Stream Company has invited the European media representatives to acquaint themselves with preparatory works on the Castoro-10 vessel.

Navies of Baltic Sea States annually find and destroy dozens of mines spending tons of explosives. If it is taken into account that there are more than 80 000 mines (according to German data about 150 000 explosive subjects) lying on a seabed, navies will finish their mine-clearance operations after 800 years. And what will happen with the Baltic Sea if all 80 000 mines will be detonated ..?

It has been considered that during the World War I and II more then 80000 sea mines were laid in the Baltic Sea. According to the German data approximately 150000 explosive subjects can be found today at the sea-bed, including mines, torpedoes, depth and aviation bombs, naval and costal artillery shells, sunken warships, aircrafts and sea transports loaded with ammunition.
